The Situation

The cultural scene in many Arab countries is limited to a few privileged circles in big cities. Most populations have no access to cultural services and little awareness of their cultural rights. Most talented people who live in marginalized communities have no access to artistic training or production. This leads to impoverishing the cultural scene and reducing its creative potential.
Large parts of the Arab region are undergoing violent conflicts or are emerging from them. Government and civil society efforts are focused on providing very basic services and no attention is given to arts and culture and their role in social change
The division among civil society sectors and the subsequent funding strategies affects the impact of civil society organizations negatively, and marginalizes the cultural civil society.
Action for Hope is well established, particularly in Mashreq countries, as an organization that promotes cultural rights and provides models for practicing them. AFH’s 5 years of experience provide an excellent springboard for program growth, while continuing focus on impact.

What we want to achieve in 3 years

Goal #1

Support the cultural sector in the countries that undergo difficult political, economic and social conditions and encourage inclusive and democratic cultural policies, approaches and practices by:

Developing the capacity and supporting the work of cultural actors: individuals, groups and movements, working with marginalized communities and seeking to protect and promote cultural rights in the Arab region
Introducing and supporting new creative perspectives by artists from marginalized communities and exploring and producing models for providing them with social protection.
Contributing to the preservation and practice of intangible cultural heritage as an important source of creativity, and supporting traditional artists and practitioners and facilitating their contribution to cultural life

Goal # 2

Play a leading role in advocating and supporting cross sector collaboration among civil society organizations globally, and enhance the role of the arts in social change by:

Leading and steering networking efforts among civil society organizations from different sectors on the global and national levels.
Supporting projects and activities that address social challenges by combining efforts from different sectors
Encouraging arts & culture organizations to engage with key organizations in other sectors

Goal # 3

Create, document and share models for providing marginalized communities at times of crisis with access to creative expression and cultural services that would enhance openness and social cohesion by:

Creating and supporting arts training models in music, film and theater, and other cultural industries
Sharing resources about community-based arts training and provision of cultural services to marginalized communities
Direct provision of cultural services to marginalized communities in Lebanon and Jordan
Provide emergency cultural relief in a timely and flexible manner to communities undergoing crisis in Arab countries wherever possible and needed
